Construction

A transportation and construction assessment has been conducted.

Good transport links for construction and movement of large turbine components such as the individual blades are essential when selecting a wind farm location.

The route considered suitable for the delivery of turbine components is to leave M1 at Junction 14; travel northwards along the A509; turn east at Junction of the A509/C14 onto Newton Road (C14),continue east along an unclassified road (UC476) to the proposed site entrance.

Some deliveries of aggregates, concrete and other builders materials may require to access the site from the north and may therefore use the A509 (Southbound) to its junction with the Newton Road and continue on the above route to site.

All turbine components can be delivered to the site without major modifications to the A509 and Newton Road. Widening of the UC476 and the construction of passing bays to facilitate traffic flow will be required. The temporary removal of street furniture (in the form of railings and bollards) will be necessary at the A509/Newton Road Junction. This would be undertaken in liaison with the local Highway Authority and Parish Council and at the cost of the Developer.

The increases in traffic due to construction on the roads are not significant. The greatest traffic movements will occur during the seven (non-consecutive) days the foundations are poured. On these seven days, traffic will increase by 1% on the A509, 13% on Newton Road and at the A509/Newton Road junction, and a near doubling of traffic on the UC476, from 14 two- way movements an hour to 27 two-way movements an hour.

The above increases are stated for the 7 days when foundations are being poured, which are the days of greatest traffic during the six and nine month construction period. During the majority of the construction period, traffic movement increases will only be half those outlined above.
